YMCA Aquatic Series Portfolio
I have raised over $2,000 for the Tempe Family YMCA in the Greater Phoenix Area, AZ, USA in 2018, and I did it with art. I was new to Phoenix, a stay-at-home mother with no business or social connections in the area, and I managed to become the top campaigner for this YMCA branch (after the Board Members). All the proceeds from the sale of my art still go to the YMCA scholarships. Sholarships are used for qualifying families who need assistance to afford membership and participation in sports programs and camps for their kids.
I loved watching swim lessons with little kids at my YMCA, where my two year old son learnt to swim. I wanted to use my interest in art and my experience in Marketing to help. So, with the permission of swim instructors, students and their parents, I photographed some swim classes and created paintings about the joy of swimming. I made several abstract paintings using the liquid acrylics to imitate the flow of water, they were affordable and popular, so I kept adding new ones, while perfecting my technique.
I started painting in September of 2017, and by May of 2018, I created over 40 works of art in acrylics, oil and watercolor. My art was displayed at two YMCA locations in the Greater Phoenix Area - at Tempe Family YMCA and at the Southwest Valley YMCA, Goodyear.
The Olympic Gold medalist of 2004, Darian Townsend, portrayed in some of my paintings, runs the Aquatics Department and coaches a swim team at the Southwest Valley YMCA in Goodyear, AZ. He has been a great source of inspiration and support. The YMCA members ordered posters of one of the paintings with Darian, and he was happy to autograph them, My project wouldn't have happened without the support of two fantastic people of Tempe Aquatics team - Lisa Thornton and Samuel Jamerson, as well as the guidance from the branch and district managers - Melissa Rector and Garrett Brolsma.
Aside from the art money, I found three in-kind donation for my YMCA: art supplies generously donated by Jerry's Artarama, swim caps donated by Speedo and kick boards donated by Poolmaster.
